HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: BASCOM Ruth F
Cc: HAMMITT Bob; PLAMONDON Scott F; DALE Randal J; DILLER Della M
Subject: FW: Woonerfs Tree Planting Opportunity
Date: Tuesday, September 05, 1995 8:46AM
Hi Ruth,
Bob Hammitt passed on to me your interest in the possibility of planting additional trees in the "woonerf"
area. The below note from Scott indicates that there are a number of possibilities. We will need to
coordinate the plantings with the Transportation Division to ensure the species /spacing of the plantings
minimizes any potential conflict with existing street lights which luminate the intersections.
Unless we hear differently from you, we will proceed to add this project to the NeighborWoods efforts this
winter. Failing finding sufficient volunteers to make this happen, we will perform the plantings by contract.
Please feel free to call X -5220 if you have any comments or concerns.
Thanks
Johnny
From: PLAMONDON Scott F
To: MEDLIN Johnny R
Subject: Woonerfs Tree Planting Opportunity
Date: Friday, August 25, 1995 2:01 PM
Johnny, I have completed my review of the woonerfs for the possibility of planting trees on them. There
is an opportunity here to plant some trees and following is a breakdown of the woonerfs that can be
planted. They are in order according to the degree of opportunity for successful planting.
1. There are three large circle islands that can be planted with groups of smaller trees. They are in the
intersection of Mill at 17th and 16th, and on Ferry at 17th.
2. There are two smaller circle islands that can be planted with a columnar or small tree. These circles are
small and if the tree is planted in them they will need to be protected from vehicles. These islands are at
15th and 14th and Ferry street.
3. There are five narrow islands that also can be planted with small trees. These islands offer the least
opportunity for tree planting. Each of them could be planted with two small or columnar trees. They may
also need to be protected from vehicles. They are located on 14th and 17th and Patterson and on 18th at
Ferry, and on 16th and 15th at High.
There are a number of other woonerfs that either have trees existing or they aren't appropriate for tree
planting.
If we can get neighborhood volunteers to plant and establish them, the woonerfs tree planting can be part
of NeighborWoods. Otherwise, we can plant and establish them with City staff.
Please let me know if you want us to proceed with these tree plantings for the woonerfs so that we can
try to find volunteers and order the trees.
Thanks Scott
Page 1
