They <br /> temper climate and air quality, remove carbon dioxide <br /> and other pollutants form the air — giving oxygen in <br /> return and their roots stabilize the soil and help stop <br /> erosion. <br /> Throughout the city, trees soften the hard surfaces of <br /> streets and buildings and provide a variety of form, tex- <br /> ture, color, color and mood to the urban environments. <br /> Trees are an integral and important part of Eugene. <br /> Ranging from Spencer Butte to Skinner Butte, they <br /> create an oasis of green arching over our streets. Many <br /> of them are evidence of Eugene's culture and history and <br /> are the result of the efforts of early- pioneers. These <br /> "heritage" trees are among the most stately and beautiful <br /> of all trees in Eugene. <br /> Why trees? They bring life to a city.
