1D&.
NEIGHBORWOODS
The City of Eugene has entered its second planting season under the Neighbor -
Woods program. For those familiar with this program, in our first season we
developed this program to take advantage of new monies from a capital improve-
ment account earmarked for street tree planting. In the spirit of "doing
things differently" as suggested by Council we invited neighbors to join and
work with the City in planting trees that would enhance their neighborhood.
The City provides bare root trees and tools for planting along with the
technical guidance in selecting proper trees and planting sites. With
enthusiasm, the neighbors provide their labor and dedication to plant and
maintain these trees. Last spring an article in the Register Guard quoted one
volunteer, "Doing it this way means the City provides what it's good at and
the neighbors pitch in what they're good at."
Last season the NeighborWoods program worked with seven neighborhoods with
approximately 200 volunteers to plant over 300 trees. This year we have 17
neighborhood groups ranging in size from 4 families along Brittany St. to over
31 families in the one section of the Westside Neighborhood. The first
planting was completed in November at the Spencer Butte Middle School. Class
by class all 300+ students help dig, plant, stake, and mulch thirty trees
which line 46th Ave. and Donald St. They worked with diligence, care, and
enthusiasm despite the cold rain that fell throughout the day. Most of the
neighborhoods will plant their trees this January and February.
The next step in the NeighborWoods program will be to find the dedicated core
of individuals from each of these neighborhoods to be trained to shepard over
the trees as they grow. We will ask them to provide minor maintenance such as
stake removal and insect and disease inspections until the trees mature.
