Date: 08/14/92
From: Jan Staszewski CEWMJXS - RIS1
To: Chris Andersen CEWACFA - RIS1
Bob Hammitt CEWMJRH - RIS1
Johnny Medlin CEWMJRM - RIS1
Dick Morgan CERMRAM - RIS1
John Etter CERMJFE - RIS1
Ben Bonner CEWMBFB - RIS1
Subject: Replanting Trees Along 8th Ave. at City Hall.
This Sunday, the Tree Crews will remove two Bigleaf Maple on 8th Ave. at City
Hall. In addition, I had scheduled to have a large tree spade replant two
trees that same afternoon. However, after discussions with Ben Bonner we
concluded that time line was too restrictive to accomodate unforeseen setbacks
(e.g. equipment breakdown, extremely rocky subsoil conditions, etc.) and still
get the trees planted. The planting contractor would charge by the hour
whether he was planting or waiting for us to finish the removals.
Furthermore Mr. Gleason called, after staff concluded to postpone the planting,
to follow -up on questions raised by a citizen as to the possibility to
replanting with the same species as we are removing - Bigleaf Maples. I told
Mr. Gleason that I had been trying to locate a source for the maples, but I
found that only three nurseries in the PNW that carry these trees. They will
not have any trees until this fall when they go into the woods to collect them.
I informed Mr. Gleason that I would place a sign on a post at each site telling
the public that the City will replant the trees this fall.
This additional time will allow me to continue looking for suitable Bigleaf
Maples. If I can not locate quality Bigleaf Maples I will plant another tree
species.
