An initial screening was done to ensure that semi - finalist candidates had
managerial as well as technical (urban forestry) skill. Then reference
checks within the urban forestry industry were made on 10 semi - finalist
candidates. This assisted us to narrow the field to 5 final candidates.
These focused on managerial and interpersonal characteristics required for
program management, in addition to the urban forestry technical skills re-
quired.
Our finalist candidates are a well qualified group and have the required
technical depth in urban forestry and public education. All candidates have
degrees in directly related fields with two of the five having Masters in
Urban Forestry. Four of the five have specific experience in managing munic-
ipal tree programs; the least experience in this group of candidates is eight
years of experience. The last of the five has two years experience within a
park setting and has implemented an urban forest program for a municipality
on contract. Of the four people with past municipal experience the cities'
populations were all greater than that of the City of Eugene. This is a
thumb -nail sketch of the finalist. I have kept their identity confidential.
* One holds a B.S. in Natural Resource Management from the University of
Minnesota and has eleven years of experience in a recognized urban forestry
program. This person currently manages an urban forestry program.
* One holds a M.S. in Urban Forestry from the University of Wisconsin, Ste-
vens Point, and has eight years experience in a recognized urban forestry
program. This person also manages an urban forestry program.
* One has a B.S. in Natural Resource Management from Colorado State Universi-
ty and ten years experience in a recognized urban forestry program. This
person is employed as a forester in an urban forestry program.
* One holds a B.S. in Forestry from Purdue University and has twelve years
experience in an urban forestry program and an additional six years supervi-
sory experience with parks and grounds maintenance. This person also manages
an urban forestry program.
* One has a M.S. in Urban Forestry from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens
Point, and two years experience in parks management. This candidate is
currently an urban forestry consultant. He has implemented an Urban Forestry
program for a Wisconsin city.
From our telephone conversation, I gathered that the creation of an urban
forest in Eugene is very important to you. I have gone to this length in my
response to you because I want you to know that this selection has received a
good deal of managerial attention and the program has received a good deal of
support from the City Council and the Tree Commission. I see us being close
to being able to make a decision that will bring skills to our community
required to create a solid urban forestry program.
We are fortunate to have such a fine field of candidates from which to
choose. Vision, the last qualification you mentioned, is difficult to deter-
mine prior to the interview portion of the selection procedure; that comes
next.
