Minutes approved
2. Tree Maintenance education program:
Committee listed four potential focus groups: Utility
workers; private arborists /tree maintenance people; Public works,
parks, city staff; Public school maintenance personnel.
Jenny reported on her conversation with Tony Lum about EWEB's
participation in Tree Maintenance training. Discussion covered
optimum timing for participation. (Crews prune spring /summer when
visual impact greatest vs. potential winter pruning schedule.)
Tony suggested establishing pruning goals based on specific
situation. For example: Using the visible corridors such as 13th
St. as demonstration program to demonstrate how pruning can work
with power line.
Other ideas for focus: pruning techniques for trees next to
power lines; tree structure compatibility with power lines;
pruning vs. actual removal.
Tony also indicated that EWEB may be receptive to idea of
working with the Commission on a training program.
He also said that the majority of requests /comments about EWEB
pruning were requests for tree removal vs. concerns about pruning
techniques. Jan said City calls ran in same vein.
Discussion: Near view (kitchen window to tree) vs. highway views
are different. People see different things. Power companies do
most of pruning vs. less from phone, cable companies. Focus could
be to train one key person who then trains others.
2b. Greta Utecht spoke to Committee about how city licensing now
works.
Synopsis: Landscape contractors must now have license through
state. This however is a simple registration. No qualification is
