OWENCH2.WPD Page 1
Owen Memorial Rose Garden Historic Cherry Tree
The Black Tartan Cherry Tree in Owen Rose Garden is nearing the ripe old age of 150. There will be a
time when the city's oldest, largest Cherry Tree will die. In order to ensure future generation's enjoyment of
this Cherry Tree, it is being propagated to provide a prodigy.
Eugene Wholesale Nursery, with the help of the City's tree crew and their aerial lift, began propagation of
the Cherry Tree in 1995. To date, there are approximately 30 grafted trees growing with the intent of
producing 50 small trees by the year 2000. These young trees are being provided to the City at or below
cost by Eugene Wholesale Nursery.
In the year 2000, as part of our Arbor Week Celebrations, we plan to have a ceremonial planting of the
Owen's Cherry Tree prodigy in Owen Rose Garden. As part of the park development plan process currently
underway, a spot is being identified for this planting. After the old Cherry Tree expires, it will live on in its
offspring for future generations to enjoy. There may be other locations in the City that are appropriate for
one of the young Owen's Cherry Trees, and will also be planted in the year 2000. In addition, it is
anticipated that there may be a number of these young trees made available to the public to purchase and
plant in their yards. For more information please call Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, Public Works
Maintenance 687 -5220.
