DOC1. WPD
Page 1
December 11, 1995
TO: Bob Hammitt
FROM: Dave Reinhard
SUBJECT: Tree on East 8th Avenue
Bob, we discussed the remaining large maple tree on 8th near Hilyard Street, near the one that was recently
removed by the McDonald's development.
I have communicated recently with Scott Plamondon about this tree in relation to the proposed South Bank
street grid proposal that was developed as part of the larger Ferry Street Bridge corridor study and the South
Bank land use conceptual plan. Although the City Council has supported the South Bank street plan in
concept, it is not part of the currently approved Ferry Street Bridge Preservation/Enhancement Project. As
such, no design work has been done, nor will it be done in the near future, for South Bank street redesign.
Although the preliminary drawings for the South Bank street alignments indicate a potential conflict
between street projects and this remaining maple tree, we are confident that the final design can be adjusted
to avoid having to remove that tree. To my knowledge there are not any other "historic street trees" within
the project area that could not be avoided in the final design. Therefore it would not be necessary to hold a
city election under the historic tree charter provision, in order to proceed with the project.
