HAMMITT Bob
From: ANDERSEN Chris F
To: HAMMITT Bob; MEDLIN Johnny R
Subject: RE: Greenscape Grant Application
Date: Tuesday, February 07, 1995 12:49PM
Johnny, Thanks for the update. THat's all I wanted to know. Chris
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: HAMMITT Bob
Cc: POTTER Glen D; PLAMONDON Scott F; ANDERSEN Chris F
Subject: Greenscape Grant Application
Date: Tuesday, February 07, 1995 10:40AM
Hi Bob,
Regarding your question: "Did we send this through the IGR Committee ?"
After having discussions on this issue with Glen Potter he
agreed to give a blanket approval for grant applications up to
$10,000 for tree plantings. This agreement is in place of the
IGR committee review. His only requirement was that we send
him a timely memo in a "memo to file" format letting him know
what we are doing.
A couple of the justifications for this action are:
1. The timeliness of going though the IGR committee process
is a little lengthy and onerous for such a small grant.
2. There is little likelihood of any other department within
the City doing grant requests for tree plantings or work
within parks that would compete.
3. We are repeatedly pushed by the Mayor and a couple of
other Councilors who ask why we haven't applied for these
small grants (we have done only one I can remember in the
past several years). In the past with Jan Staszewski and his
workload issues, we were not comfortable with going ahead with
grant requests. With the new Urban Forester now on the job
many of these concerns have been resolved. We are carefully
looking at the associated staff requirements that go with
these grant requests and making sure we have the resources.
There is a significant political PR benefit we will get for
this program in doing these type of small grants.
I hope that has answered your questions. Please let me know
if you need additional info.
Thanks
Johnny
Page 1
