HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: ANDERSEN Chris F
Cc: HAMMITT Bob; PLAMONDON Scott F; BLACK Bradley G; HIBSCHMAN Bob A
Subject: Broadway Project Tree Removal Request
Date: Monday, July 07, 1997 2:29PM
Hi Chris,
As you requested, here is a summary of what I found regarding the request to remove two additional trees
on the west side of the parking structure project. (Trees in the east side of the Lincoln St. right -of -way.)
SHORT VERSION:
The decision was made that the trees do not need to be removed. This will require the building contractor
to shore the excavation for the parking structure in the vicinity of the trees. This shoring was promised to
us as a part of the efforts to save the trees and is necessary to have any chance of saving the last Heritage
class tree on the corner.
LONG VERSION:
What is happening is the parking structure contractor really doesn't want to do shoring. This desire is
complicated by at an existing gas line is within the right -of -way between the trees and the sidewalk. The
new building is not to be served by this line but it would require the parking structure contractor to do
additional shoring to allow it to fully stay in its existing alignment in the Lincoln St. right -of -way.
So .... the gas company has been told that they need to move their line farther to the west to save the
project the cost of shoring. From my experience managing the utility permit program, if this was a private
project I suspect they would refuse to do so without being reimbursed.
The trees would only come to be an issue if we would allow the contractor to skip the shoring in the area
of the trees. In other words, we could save the project the cost of shoring if we allowed the trees to be
removed. The issue of the gas line relocation was secondary and really was not the "root" cause of the
tree removal request.
Since we would not allow the trees to be removed the contractor must do the shoring and therefore it
looks like the gas company doesn't have to relocate in those areas either. This should reduce the amount
of their relocation needed.
Please give me a call if you have questions.
Thanks
Johnny
Page 1
