Tree City USA award flags. Distributing the flags to elementary
schools has been a really nice idea. However, it seems that the
significance of 19 consecutive awards is being lost. I'd like to develop
some ideas for displaying these for maximum impact and public visibility.
Imagine the decorative, celebratory, and public awareness value of 19
flags in a row!. for example, seen by thousands at the Lane County
Fairgrounds during the County Fair, or at the airport during holiday
travel season, or carried by City councilors and neighborhood leaders
(joint entry, similar to CC /Planning Commission a while back) in the
Eugene Celebration parade.
2. Celebration Tree Program. At a budget committee meeting this year I
raised the idea of donation programs to fund more tree planting, as we
have dwindling city resources. How about this idea: develop and promote
a program to "sell" trees as gifts to commemorate birthdays, marriages,
birth of a new child, honoring a lifetime, etc. Just as people bought
bricks for the Hult, perhaps people could "buy" trees for streets and
parks and other appropriate places. A gift card would be sent to the
recipient, or ... for more $, maybe a tag on the tree as well? Anyway,
perhaps you could give it some thought. An on -line literature search by a
reference librarian could yield examples of similar programs elsewhere.
Thanks,
Nancy
Page 1
