Areas to be planted include schools,
residential areas, parks, and commercial locations.
Arbor Week has been an annual event in Eugene for 19 years, since the City was first
named a Tree City USA. This year again the City again will receive the Tree City USA honor
from The National Arbor Day Founation, a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree
planting and environmental stewardship.
Among the reasons Eugene qualifies for the award are the City's tree ordinance,
comprehensive urban forestry plan, Arbor Week observances, and NeighborWoods program.
Since the NeighborWoods program was established in 1992, local volunteers have planted more
than 4,000 street trees throughout the city. These trees beautify the city's neighborhoods as well
as conserve energy, help clean the air, protect rivers and streams, and provide a home for
wildlife.
An award ceremony to receive the Tree City USA recognition and honor NeighborWoods
volunteer coordinators is slated in May.
# ##
r,_.t.r of Pi nono • R Pond • F I InPnP f1R Q74(1i -9797 Phnnro (6411 RR9 - . • FAX (411 R112
