a) During the Establishment period, each tree shall receive 15 <br /> gallons of water per week during the growing season from <br /> April 15th through October 15th. <br /> b) Water shall be provided in a manner that allows penetration <br /> into the soil around the tree. <br /> 4. Staking. <br /> a) Stakes and ties shall be maintained during the establishment <br /> period in a safe and effective manner. <br /> b) Stakes and ties shall be removed after the first growing season <br /> or one year after installation. <br /> 5. Mulching. <br /> a) A minimum 3 ft. x 3 ft. planting area around each tree shall be <br /> maintained with a layer of bark mulch 2 -4 inches in depth. <br /> b) The mulch shall be kept away from the trunk of the tree. <br /> c) The mulched planting area around the tree shall be kept free <br /> of weeds. <br /> 6. Pruning. <br /> a) Any dead, broken or split branches shall be pruned at the time <br /> of planting <br /> b) Initial structural pruning shall be performed at the end of the <br /> three year establishment period. <br /> c) A strong scaffold branch structure shall be developed by <br /> pruning to select the primary scaffold branches. <br /> d) Prune to remove branches that are crossing, damaged, <br /> diseased, broken, or have included bark. <br /> e) Trees shall not be topped or reduced in height unless approved <br /> by the Urban Forester. <br /> f) Trees shall be pruned so that two thirds of the tree's height is <br /> canopy with one third of the height being the trunk. <br /> g) Prune off lower limbs or tip back lower limbs to meet <br /> 12 <br />
