3. Planting general conditions <br /> a) Balled and burlapped trees. <br /> 1. Trees shall have a sound ball that has not been allowed <br /> to dry out at anytime. <br /> 2. Root ball shall be firmly attached to the trunk. <br /> 3. Only materials that are untreated and biodegradable <br /> may be left around root ball after planting. <br /> 4. When planing remove tie material and peel back burlap <br /> to expose soil on at least the top 1/3 of the root ball. <br /> 5. Cut off wire baskets to a depth of at least 18" from the <br /> top of the root ball. <br /> c) container grown tree. <br /> 1. Remove from the container and softly loosen root mass. <br /> 2. Inspect roots for a girdling or circling condition. If <br /> girdling or circling roots are present, the tree shall not <br /> be planted. Only trees free of girdling or circling roots <br /> shall be planted. <br /> 3. Trees shall be grown in the container for a maximum of <br /> one year. <br /> d) Bare root trees. <br /> 1. Roots are not allowed to dry out at any time. <br /> 2. Prune off all dead, damaged, broken or frayed roots <br /> prior to planting. <br /> 4. Planting. <br /> a) Set the tree on undisturbed solid ground in the center of the <br /> hole so that the upper surface of the root ball or trunk flare is <br /> slightly above the surrounding soil. <br /> b) Set tree plumb, upright, and faced for best appearance.
