Guidelines for Tree and Shrub Plantings Along Amazon Creek
staff of the POS Natural Resources section, where stream plantings have already been
incorporated into annual work plans.
Purpose
These planting guidelines are written for people involved in planting projects on Amazon Creek,
such as volunteer groups. They include descriptions of the creek's existing geology,
geomorphology and plant communities, including some of the human impacts to these
conditions. Further, this document provides detailed descriptions of tree and shrub species,
quantities, spacing and clustering information that is tailored to each segment of the creek.
Part of the purpose of the document is to help City staff plan appropriate planting projects to
shade the water within Amazon Creek, to help meet the City's requirement to lower the water
temperature of the Creek. The plan also helps the City more generally implement the three
primary goals of the Comprehensive Store Water Management Plan (CSMP), which address
flood control, water quality improvement and protection of natural resources. This document is
limited to providing guidelines for tree and shrub plantings. Particular spacing and species notes
should be updated on a continuous basis, as knowledge and experience dictate. The plan does
not preclude other options with scientific merit, nor does it in any way preclude larger restoration
projects from occurring that would improve habitat conditions even more than the current
channel configuration allows.
Organization of the document
This document is divided into three chapters: Upper, Middle, and Lower Amazon Creek. This
division makes it easier to understand the different stream habitat types. For the purposes of this
report, Amazon Creek will be evaluated from Martin Street at the upstream end to the Fern
Ridge Reservoir at the downstream end. The chapters follow a common framework, which
includes location, geology and geomorphology, human activities, and finally the plant
communities, including both existing conditions and the Guidelines for Tree and Shrub
Plantings. These individual components include the following:
A. Location: This section describes where exactly this part of the Amazon Creek is located.
B. Geology/ Landforms — Geomorphology/ Stream shape: Geology or landforms describes the
creek's surroundings. For example, does the creek flow through open land or close to
buildings? Geomorphology or stream shape describes how the creek looks in its channel. For
example, is their bedrock or is there only gravel?
C. Human Activities: This section has a description of past human activities and why they
occurred. Some of these activities are still necessary for safety, like flood protection.
D. Plant Communities: Existing Conditions and Guidelines for Trees and Shrub Plantings
4
