WELCOMING REMARKS BY JOHNNY MEDLIN 3 -5 minutes
•
1. Staff has planned a very full day, and all the speakers have been asked to be concise
and keep their remarks to the key points. I'll try and set a good example here.
2. Welcome to the City of Eugene and to the Parks and Open Spaces Division
headquarters. I'm Johnny Medlin, Director of the division, and my role is to
welcome you, make sure you're comfortable, introduce a few of the folks here today,
and then hand off the meeting to Jim who'll get the program started.
3. The City of Eugene is pleased to be co- hosting todays tour with The Nature
Conservancy and Lane Council of Governments. Partnerships are a great way to
make things happen, and we've shown here in the southern Willamette Valley that we
know how to make partnerships work. In 1998 the City of Eugene passed a Parks
and Open Space bond Measure, which included $3.7 million for open space
acquisition to expand our Ridgeline Park System. Needless to say, we are very
enthusiastic about the Forest Legacy program and how this new partnership new
provides opportunities to leverage that funding.
4. There are a number of folks that I would like to extend a special thanks to for their
attendance:
Eugene's Mayor Jim Torrey,
City Councilor Nancy Nathanson
Springfields City Manager, Mike Kelly
Terry Moffit, of Senator Gordon Smith's staff
Emily Williams, of Senator Ron Wyden's staff
Cathi Eastman, of Representative Peter Defazio's staff
The Oregon Department of Forestry staff and
Staff from the House Appropriations committee in Washington DC
