DATE: May, 11,1994
TO: RICHARD A. MORGAN
FROM: ADRIAN STANSFIELD
SUBJECT: RECENT INCIDENTS INVOLVING TREES
We have recently had to respond to trees or sections of trees that have fallen
and required action on our part.
1. Friday, May.6. 1994 at approximately 1:30 pm. I received a call from a
neighbor to Acorn Park. She stated that "One of the large Oak trees just fell
over." Investigation revealed a large, 36" - 40" Quercus garryana had fallen
as a result of root rot on the south side of the tree. The tree was
approximately 100 feet in height. Friday was a nice warm day and there were
three women seated in the playground area, attending about six children
ranging in age from two to six years. Speaking with an older child at the
scene, (There were from eight to ten kid in the park at the time, aged 10 to
14 years)he stated, "Ya, my brother stood right here and just watched it fall
over." "Right here" was less than 20 feet from where it came to rest. I
dispatched a crew to make the tree safe, (Remove the limbs, chip the brush and
barricade the area off with caution tape) and the tree was milled into 1"
boards on site the following Monday. May 9th, by Ted Henke, owner of Logs To
Lumber. Thursday, May 12, we returned to clean up what was left remove the
stump and fill in the hole. Our total time involved in the clean up was 14
person hours.
2. On Saturday. May 7. 1994 at 6:00 pm. I received a call from Gene Shutt,
reporting "A 3 foot Tree had fallen across Madison at 12th Street" according
to the police department. I responded with a crew and found it was not an
entire tree but a large portion of an Acer macrophyllum (Oregon Maple). A
large lead, 30 ", had rotted at it's connection to the trunk. With the weight
of moisture in the upper portions it broke off and completely blocked Madison.
The point at which the butt of the limb came down was 40 inches from a camper,
parked on the street. There were significant problems with decay in one of
the two remaining leads that warranted the trees removal. which we did on
Monday. May 9th.
While a tree inspector may not have been able to detect the problem with the
Oak tree in Acorn Park, having been underground. They probably would have seen
the problem with the Maple tree. In fact, this tree is in the same condition
as trees we have already removed as part of our remove and replace program.
