Sources for
RECOMMENDED TREE SPECIES
for Plantings in the Public Right -of -Way
City of Eugene
The following list includes species which are known to grow well in Eugene, when properly
matched with soil type, and which are generally available in Willamette Valley nurseries.
Special permission is required to plant species other than those on this list in the
public right -of -way. In either case, a planting permit must be completed (phone 687 -5220
for permit information).
Trees in urban areas act as giant air - conditioners, cooling and cleaning city air. The
bigger the tree, the more benefits our community derives from it. Residents are en-
couraged to plant species in the right -of -way which will eventually provide the largest
canopy possible on a given site.
Each line below lists the acronym, botanical name, and common name for each species. It
also indicates if that species can be planted bare -root (BR) during the dormant season, or
can only be planted if balled- and - burlapped (B &B). Representative wholesale nurseries
that are known to currently grow the species are listed next. Finally, trees tolerant of
the poorly drained soils of Eugene's "clay neighborhoods" are indicated.
A separate document lists the major attributes (ornamental and otherwise) of each species
and Eugene addresses where one can see examples of the species.
LARGE - CANOPY BROADLEAF TREES ( >50 ft in 50 yrs)
Acma Acer macrophyllum bigleaf maple BR EW, JF
Acpl Acer platanoides Norway maple BR EW, HN
Acps Acer pseudoplatanus sycamore maple BR HN, CP
Acsal Acer saccharinum silver maple BR EW, HN, CP clay
Acsa2 Acer saccharum sugar maple BR HN, CP
Aehi Aesculus hippocastanum European horsechestnut B &B HN clay
Casp Catalpa speciosa northern catalpa BR EW, HN clay
Coco Corylus colurna Turkish filbert BR CP clay
Fram Fraxinus americana white ash BR HN, MN
Frex Fraxinus excelsior European ash BR ? clay
Gltr Gleditsia triacanthos honeylocust BR HN
List Liquidambar styraciflua sweetgum B &B EW, HN clay
Litu Liriodendron tulipifera tuliptree B &B EW, HN
Pato Paulownia tomentosa paulownia BR NW
Plac Platanus x acerifolia London planetree BR HN, CP clay
Quco Quercus coccinea scarlet oak BR HN
Qupa Quercus palustris pin oak BR EW, HN clay
Quph Quercus phellos willow oak BR HN, CP, HM clay
Quru Quercus rubra northern red oak BR EW, HN
Rops Robinia pseudoacacia black locust BR HN, NW clay
Tiam Tilia americana American linden BR ?
Tipl Tilia platyphyllos broadleaf linden BR HN
Tito Tilia tomentosa silver linden BR HN, CP
1
