TREE REQUEST LIST
1992 -93
The following list enables those of us helping to plant new trees to easily enter,
manipulate, and retrieve information about available planting sites. It is designed, too,
to quickly provide current information to volunteer neighborhood Project Leaders (PL's)
working with the NeighborWoods Coordinator (NC).
The City of Eugene is divided into sections (A, B, etc.), to help narrow the work area.
Within each section, the information is divided into eight columns, for which tabs are
already set. (Please use the tabs when entering information, rather than using the space
bar to move from one column to the next.)
Column 1: Street address. Planting sites are listed within each section alphabetically
for Eugene's named streets, and numerically for our numbered avenues. East (E) avenues
precede west (W) avenues. The few streets in.Eugene with addresses having a "north"
prefix are simply listed among the addresses for the rest of that street. For corner
lots, an additional note is required to ensure that trees are planted along the ap-
propriate street.
Column 2: Replacement (R) vs new (N) trees.
Column 3: Number and size of trees. If information is NOT yet underlined, it indicates
that the number /size of trees suitable for that site has not yet been checked or confirmed
by either the PL or the NC. After a site visit confirms that size /number are appropriate,
please underline this column. Small trees (S) are those whose mature canopy is less than
30 ft in height (generally planted only where electric wires limit selection, or where
treelawn is less than 4 ft in width). Medium trees (M) have a mature canopy 30 -50 ft in
height. And large trees (L) have a canopy more than 50 ft in height.
Column 4: Species acronym. See "Recommended Tree Species" for acronyms (first two
letters of genus, first two letters of specific epithet, and first two letters of
cultivar, if applicable). This column lists the requested species, if any, at the time of
initial contact. Participants in the NeighborWoods program are generally not asked for
their preferences. Rather, the PL explains to them that the City's NC will recommend a
species appropriate for the site (and addresses where living examples can be viewed). An
underlined acronym indicates that the NC has okayed this species for the site, and the
trees will be ordered for the following planting season.
Column 5: Resident's name. The name of the adjacent homeowner /tenant who requested the
tree(s). A parenthesized "T" following the name indicates tenant; an "0" indicates owner.
Column 6: Telephone number. The home (h) or work (w) phone number of the person
requesting the tree(s).
Column 7: Status of the request. "I" is the date of the initial request, when it was
first added to this list (by the Tree Crew, following a removal; or by call -in from a
resident /tenant). "R" is the date when City- acquired information is referred to the ap-
propriate PL, or when PL's first submit their own site lists as a result of canvassing the
neighborhood (in which case, of course, step "I" is not required). "P" is the date on
which the trees were finally planted. At that point, a hard copy of the information
regarding address, species, and planting date is filed (for eventual inclusion in the
City's general tree inventory) and the information can then be deleted from this list.
Please delete previous activity and date when entering the current one.
Column 8: PL initials. The two initials of the volunteer neighborhood Project Leader who
is responsible for this site.
If you need more space for information about any single entry, please use additional
lines.
