ITEM TITLE: NEIGHBORWOODS PROGRAM AWARD CEREMONY
ACTION REQUESTED: Presentation of awards to NeighborWoods volunteer leaders
BRIEFING STATEMENT:
In an effort to increase the number of new trees planted and cared for in the public rights -of-
way, the Public Works Department in 1992 began a volunteer tree planting program called
NeighborWoods. By using volunteers and innovative planting and nurturing techniques, the
City has created a successful, efficient, and low -cost program that has stretched limited City
resources and provided young trees with the care and maintenance they need to survive. The
volunteers provide the care and water needed by the young trees to make it through the first
critical years. In addition, the high - quality care provided by the volunteers in conjunction
with the expertise offered by City staff ensures healthier trees and reduces the likelihood of
expensive maintenance problems later.
During the 1993 -94 tree planting season, approximately 173 volunteers planted more than 340"
trees in Eugene neighborhoods and at area schools. The award ceremony is the City's
opportunity to recognize the work and energy of the volunteers who have made the program
a resounding success.
ITEMS UNDER SEPARATE COVER:
1.
