EUGENE Public Works
Maintenance
1820 Roosevelt Boulevard
Eugene, Oregon 97402
(503) 687 -5220
July 1992
Greetings!
As part of the City of Eugene's growing urban forestry program, nearly five
hundred trees were planted in our community this past season, including those
in your neighborhood!
Now that the trees are happily in the ground, we are asking adjacent residents
and businesses to assume care of the young trees, since you are better able to
provide essential on -site care and surveillance than we are. If you can care
for the new tree(s) in front of your residence or business, please return the
enclosed card as soon as possible.
Your care is especially important during the first three (3) years.
WATER: Tender, young trees need at least 15 gallons of water once a week for
the first three years (that's ten standard six -quart bucketsful, not more and
not less). Nature should do most of the work for you in the winter and spring
months. But from mid -May until late September, you will need to water your
trees just once a week even during weeks when we might get a bit of rain.
(Always watering on the same day of the week will help you remember to do it.)
Note: The idea here is to make sure the entire root zone is watered. A slow
trickle of the hose for an hour will do, if it gets moved around the entire
mulched area. (Watering time is also a good time to weed!)
WEED: We remove grass and then mulch around trees for two reasons: grass and
weeds compete with new trees for nutrients and water...and you'll be less
likely to nick the trunk with your mower. Please take care not to injure your
trees, and keep ALL plants and weeds (and footsteps!) out of the mulched
planting area.
WATCH: Together, we must all look out for our Young trees to protect them
from kids, dogs, mowers, and other damage. Leaving the stake(s) in helps
protect them, too. And if you notice a wilting tree on a hot summer day, you
might approach the owner /caretaker with a smile and suggest a drink of water
for it. This neighborly attitude will ensure that our investment in street
trees pays off.
Should any questions or problems arise, please contact us at 687 -5220 (Public
Works Maintenance).
Our community's urban forestry program is a success because of volunteers.
With your help, we will be a bit closer to revitalizing our urban forest and,
of course, to making your neighborhood a nicer place in which to live and
work.
THANKS!!
