/ etgtd-e'
Over the past 10 weekends your neighbors have been out, in the rain and
sunshine planting close to 400 trees through the NeighborWoods program. Since
last year the program has grown from 7 neighborhoods with 100 people to 21
neighborhoods with more than 300 citizens. These citizens are homeowners,
renters, landlords, ministers, businessmen, teacher, students, and children.
In short, everyone who lives in a neighborhood is out planting trees.
The concept of NeighborWoods is simple, the program blends together what each
does best: the City provides the technical know -how, hand tools, and trees,
while the neighbors provide the labor to plant, water, and care for "their"
trees. In addition, the volunteer program allows City crews to concentrate on
life - safety maintenance of our large, older tree population, while neighbor-
hoods achieve a greener more pleasant enviroment along with a greater sense of
community.
In practice, someone calls the City to find out how the program works. The
citizen is sent a packet on "how -to." The neighborhood leader then canvasses
the neighborhood to find out who wants to plant trees in front of their home.
The neighborhood leader then gets back to the City with the list of trees.
Then one Saturday or Sunday the City shows up in their neighborhood with a
truck load of trees and we spend the day planting.
The results of this program are that everyone comes out ahead, the City with a
reduction of expenditures, but an increase in services, the neighborhoods
become greener and more friendly, while the environment just gets better every
planting day. As of today, XX neighborhoods groups are forming for next
year's efforts.
Thank you for your time.
,(/(/(ie
