Not all Access Lanes will fit the criteria for use of grassed swale drainage systems; some may
not be in an area that is suitable for grassed swales; others may have safety issues which
would require standard curbs.
Inverted curbs will also be required on private alleys paved with asphalt rather than concrete.
The inverted curb will permit the alley to be constructed with a crown allowing water to drain
to the side of the alley, and,.again, will prevent the asphalt street edge from breaking down.
Rolled Curbs Typically, rolled curbs are shorter and less vertical than the standard curb.
While some consider them more aesthetically pleasing than standard curbs, rolled curbs do not
contain and channel stormwater runnoff as effectively, and do not prevent vehicles from
parking on planting strips and sidewalks. In addition,' rolled curbs do not have sufficient height
to contain drainage pipes that carry water from roof drains to the steet gutter. This plan
recommends a modified rolled curb which maintains a height necessary to accommodate roof
drainage pipes and to contain stormwater runoff in the gutter, but has a more rounded top and
bottom and presents a "softer" appearance than the standard curb.
* *INSERT DRAWINGS OF BOTH CURB TYPES **
r
33
