EUGENE Public Works
Maintenance
1820 Roosevelt Boulevard
Eugene, Oregon 97402
21, 1994 (503) 687 -5220
Jim Ande n
2 076 usket Street
gene, Oregon 97408
•
Re: Street trees at 1390 Oak Street
Dear Jim:
You recently made an inquiry concerning the 8 Walnut trees in front of your property at the
above address. You expressed a desire to have them removed and replaced with a more pleasing
species of street tree. The city's new Urban Forester, Scott Plamondon, and I have visited the site
and familiarized ourselves with the situation. We have discussed the issue with our Public
Works Maintenance Support Manager, Johnny Medlin, and the following is our assessment.
Public Works policy pertaining to nuisance trees in the right of way will allow removal of trees
only if they score higher in negative attributes than positive. If removal is warranted, the cost of
removal and replacement is to be borne by the property owner. The eight trees have been scored
and only the two closest to the intersection score high enough for removal at this time. The city's
tree crew will put the other six walnut trees on a maintenance schedule to perform some
corrective pruning .
If, in the future, you feel the trees have deteriorated further, we would be happy to reassess the
condition of the trees.
Since the two tree to be removed are in the vision clearance zone of the intersection, it would not
be appropriate to replant trees in the same location. The city's policy is that if the replacements
cannot be made in the exact location, then the replacements will be planted in an appropriate
location as close to the site as practical. Possibly on Alder, 14th, or on Hilyard Street. The intent
here is to keep the benefit of street trees in the same neighborhood. If you have a preference on
the species of tree you would like to use as replacement or a location close to your site, please
let us know so that we may give approval, otherwise we will select species and appropriate
location for your replacements.
