Post - It'" brand fax transmittal memo 7671 1# of pages ■
iTo Fro P on
Co. Co.
V V Co.0 .
n 1 Cv l e 4 l e 1-j'A
Dept. Phone # , ---
v /
Fax # a et/ _ / p c^/ / Fax # / t 3 689
Dc TREE ISSUES MEETING
EWEB /City of Eugene
November 1, 1993 @ Coburg /Oakway
ATTENDING: EWEB: Marty Douglass, Dave Koski, & Brad Edwards
CITY: Jan Staszewski, Dick Morgan, John Etter, Adrian Stansfield,
& Johnny Medlin
The general topic of discussion was regarding EWEB's need to obtain the needed
15' line clearance from the transmission lines on the west side of Coburg Road
between Oakway and Oakmont. The mutual goal was to find a way to use this
situation as a model on how the process for handling EWEB /CITY tree issues
coordination could be formalized.
Review of the specific trees in question resulted in the following items of
agreement:
1. This type of tree (Sweet Gums and Maples) are not appropriate for this
location under the lines.
2. An ultimate goal would be the removal of these trees and their
replacement with a species attainting a lower height at maturity.
3. Trimming of these trees by any method will have a large impact on the
aesthetic aspects of the trees. Doing "Drop Crotch" pruning may have a
better long term aesthetic appearance, but this may be an issue of
individual preference.
4. Removal of these trees all at once would likely cause an unacceptable
amount of public concern.
5. Both agencies wish the public to understand that we are professionals
that are concerned both with the environmental aspects of our service
provision as well as our production.
Jan pointed out that his experience has been that we need to show the public
we have done everything in our power to save a tree before we remove it. This
concept was discussed by the group and agreed that we should not remove a tree
if there was other "reasonable" alternatives.
The merits of having a consultant tree service with environmental credentials
conduct a two day training for combined EWEB and CITY crews was discussed.
The idea was this training would be beneficial in both providing our crews
with additional training as well as documenting both agencies willingness to
be open minded to look for better environmental alternatives to our practices.
A plan of action was agreed upon as follows:
Jan will contact "West Coast" or similar consultant tree services which offer
1
