The trimming will extend through the month of March and will be in an area bounded by
West 13th on the south, Chambers Street on the west, Washington Street on the east, and the
Willamette River on the north.
EWEB and the City are working together to coordinate their tree programs to provide
electric services as efficiently as possible while minimizing the impacts to the urban forest.
EWEB's tree trimming crew will use new pruning methods that were recently taught in a
jointly sponsored tree trimming workshop for City and EWEB tree crews.
According .to Marty Douglass, EWEB's intergovernmental relations manager, "The
.Whitaker project is the first cooperative project using the new trimming methods taught in the
workshop. In the past, EWEB has trimmed trees using the "round over" approach. Round
over pruning requires more individual cuttings, which sometimes affects the health of the tree
and encourages the growth of suckers. It also requires more frequent pruning, which can
cause further damage to the tree."
