Cabling - -- This means structurally securing limbs, trunks, or scaffolds to
other tree members for the purpose of stabilizing, holding together, and
decreasing the potential for structural failure of the tree. On this project, we
suggest the use of Cobra system cabling, (the most installed cabling system
in Europe), because it is adjustable over time and can be reused.
Pruning - -- For these trees, pruning consists of reducing the tip loading (end
weight) of potentially hazardous lateral scaffolding and branches, which
might also affect the structural stability and integrity of the trunk. Pruning is
also used for the reduction of windsail and weight.
Shaping & Balancing - -- This technique balances the structure of the tree
through correct pruning techniques by bringing the center of gravity of the
tree closer to its center and shaping the tree so it would not look like a
wishbone. We recommend allowing the sprouts, epicormic shoots (suckers)
to grow within reason, and not stripping them from the keeper trees from
now on. Within reason, leave all branches that grow parallel to the road
(that were unnecessarily removed in the past), to allow more natural shapes
to form.
Crown reduction (recentralization) - -- This allows the branches,
epicormic shoots, and sprouts to grow and photosynthesize within the central
area of the tree. Allowing the center of the tree to be filled and green up,
and simultaneously reducing the tip loads, forces the overextended tree
inwards. Restricting the crown or tree canopy toward the center, reduces the
length of the branches, reduces weight and windsail hazards, increasing its
retention chances for a longer period of time.
Aphids - -- In case the aphid infestation we found on many of the trees
becomes a problem, and considering the environmental sensitivity of the
neighborhood, we propose the following treatments: pressure washing with
plain water and/or insecticidal soaps, and/or the manual release of
predacious insects, e.g. lady bugs.
Nutrient Health Improvement Measures:
Tree Roots: - -- On the keeper trees, we recommend the application of
mulch, the time- release nutrient NPK, beneficial mycorrhizal fungus spores,
and humic acid injections into the soil.
9
