SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Within two years, stabilize and/or replace at least a third of the
trees, most if not all to be replaced by planting the right tree for the
right place and the rest to be stabilized quickly.
2. Another third should be stabilized and replaced over a period of
time, within a decade. (Trees in this group are considered near
the balance point of replacement and conservation. When
conservation is chosen, and as appropriate for each individual tree,
pruning, immediate cabling, balancing,
and monitoring are recommended.)
3. The final third where it would be possible , appropriate and
effective, could be pruned, cabled, balanced, and monitored
for a decade or longer. Root crown examinations are
recommended to be done periodically for all keeper trees.
OUR SUGGESTIONS:
1. With the cooperation of the neighborhood, proactively start a joint
urban forest improvement project. Start planting trees in the
hundreds of empty planting spaces in the neighborhood.
2. Make a joint city - community public announcement stating the
commencement of immediate tree planting, phased pruning, and
replacement of the most apparently hazardous trees.
3. Document and publicize the net gain of this win -win plan
as an excellent model project illustrating how to turn a
negative and hostile situation into a constructive and
community - building venture for other communities to
follow. We know this is an excellent opportunity for all
concerned.
7
