AS - <br /> l <br /> .1m 1•1111111•11■MINIIIIIIMINIIIIII <br /> EUGENE I EN ■n 'A'ai - n■n�r�A <br /> i <br /> September 8, 1998 <br /> CONTACT: Johnny Medlin, Support Services Manager, 682 -4800 <br /> Kevin Foerstler, Tree Crew Supervisor, 682 -4822 <br /> From Public Information Section, 682 -5523 <br /> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> SECOND TREE ON AGATE STREET FOUND TO HAVE DUTCH ELM DISEASE <br /> A second street tree in east Eugene has tested positive for Dutch elm disease and is <br /> scheduled to be removed Wednesday, September 9, between 8:30 and 10 a.m. The tree, on Agate <br /> Street near 17` Avenue, is next to where a diseased elm was removed by Eugene Public Works in <br /> August. <br /> Following the removal of the first infected elm, Public Works staff took samples from 16 <br /> nearby elm trees and sent them to the Oregon Department of Agriculture for testing. All of those <br /> trees except the one being removed on Wednesday came back with negative results for Dutch elm <br /> disease. The City is still awaiting results from six additional samples sent in after the 16 trees were <br /> tested. <br /> Dutch elm disease only affects elm trees, particularly American elms. The disease is highly <br /> contagious, and the Oregon Department of Agriculture strongly recommends immediate removal of <br /> infected trees to reduce the potential for spreading the disease to other trees. <br /> The Eugene Public Works Department will remove and replace any street elms found to be <br /> infected with Dutch elm disease. Public Works also will inspect and remove diseased elms on <br /> private property at no cost to property owners.
