City
code places the responsibility for maintenance of sidewalks and ground level
landscaping on the abutting property owner. The tree grates in question are
considered an extension of the sidewalk, and their maintenance, therefore, is
the responsibility of the abutting property owner.
However, it is not unusual for the City to offer assistance in maintaining
assets within the street right -of -way in certain circumstances. Since tree
Parks and open grates are not commonly used in the city, I believe this is one of those cases
Space Planning where the City's involvement is warranted.
Parks Maintenance
Urban Forestry On June 8, our tree crew removed three grates and filled in the planting pits
with loam to bring them up to grade. Our staff also discussed the situation
Wetlands and open with John Martsfield, maintenance manager at the Hilton, explained that
Waterways continued maintenance in this area is their responsibility, and offered
suggestions for ongoing maintenance. We are hopeful that our assistance
will facilitate the proper maintenance of these areas in the future.
Again, thank you for alerting us about this situation, and I hope your mother
is recovering swiftly from her injuries.
Sincerely,
Q
/-- —
Johnny R.
