July 9, 2014

To: All 2014 Golden Gardens Dog Training Permit Holders

As you may remember, the main pond at Golden Gardens Park has developed blooms of
blue-green algae in the summer months, once the weather turns hot. Blue-green algae
(actually a cyanobacteria and not algae at all) sometimes produce toxins that can be
harmful to swimmers and other water users, including dogs.

Rather than testing each blue-green algal bloom when it occurs, Parks and Open Space
has opted to post signage at Golden Gardens Park when the blue-green algae first
becomes noticeable. Signs were posted around the ponds and at most entry points to the
park on July 9, 2014.

Attached are copies of the poster and brochure produced by Oregon Department of
Health Services. Please feel free to pass these along.

animalSafetyBrochurHABs_dogSafety201
e_2010WEB.pdf0.FINAL.pdf

This link has more educational information about blue-green algae and the risks to
people and animals.

Should you have questions specific to Golden Gardens Park, please contact Lauri Holts
at 541-682-4925 or email lauri.j.holts@ci.eugene.or.us

Sincerely,

Neil Bjorklund
POS Planning Manager
