July 8, 2014

CONTACT: Lindsay Selser, Transportation Options Coordinator, 541-682-5094

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calling All Superheroes! Sunday Streets Needs Volunteers!

Eugene Sunday Streets still needs more than 60 volunteers to make a major downtown event
on July 20 safe and fun for everyone.
Intersection “superheroes” are especially needed. Intersection superheroes help direct traffic
flow, answer questions, redirect neighborhood traffic, and set up or take down barricades at their
designated intersection. There are two shifts available: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 1:30 to 4 p.m. If you
are interested in volunteering, please go to www.eugene-or.gov/essvolunteer to sign up, or call the
Eugene Sunday Streets volunteer coordinator at 541-501-0390.
This summer marks the fourth year of Eugene Sunday Streets, a free event that focuses on
building community and promoting active lifestyles. On two Sundays – July 20 and September 21 –
from noon to 4 p.m. people will be able to walk, roll, bike, and dance in the streets along a car-free
route. The first event will be held along 5 Avenue and at the new WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza in
th
Washington Jefferson Park. The second event will be held in the Harlow neighborhood.
Sunday Streets Downtown is presented by the City of Eugene with support from Point2Point
Solutions at Lane Transit District. Washington Jefferson Park and 5 Avenue near Pearl Street will
th
feature activity centers along the route. The activity center at Washington Jefferson Park will include a
skateboard clinic at the new skatepark, roller derby lessons and free scrimmage, learn to bike lessons,
and pedal-powered music stage featuring, the Chumlo Bros., Soulicious, Calongo and Olive DelSol. The
5 Avenue at Pearl Block Party will feature yard games by Playground Sports, Bike Shop Expo, and live
th
musical performances by the North Eugene Ukulele Orchestra.
With no designated start or finish, the two-way, car-free route can be enjoyed by foot, bicycle,
roller skates, or dancing at everyone’s own pace. The event is designed to get the entire community
outside, having fun and enjoying healthy activities in Eugene’s public spaces while showing how easy
it is to get around by human-powered transportation.
To volunteer or learn more about Eugene Sunday Streets go to www.eugenesundaystreets.org
or call 541-501-0390.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
