July 8, 2014

CONTACT: John Bonham, Project Manager, 541-682-5300

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ferry Street Bridge Viaduct Repairs Begin This Weekend
Motorists crossing the Ferry Street Bridge will encounter significant lane detours for the next four
weekends.
The 600 feet of deteriorated asphalt paving between the south end of the bridge and the Third/Fourth
Avenue on- and off-ramps will be replaced with concrete surfacing one lane at a time beginning Friday, July 11, at 7
p.m. First the northbound lanes and then the southbound lanes will be repaired over a four-weekend period.
When a lane is being repaired, all traffic will be shifted to the other side of the bridge on Friday at 7 p.m.,
with one lane of traffic in each direction. This traffic pattern will be maintained until the old asphalt surface has
been removed and the new concrete surface has been poured. Then, probably Saturday evening, the lane next to
the lane being repaired will be reopened and traffic in that direction will be limited to that one lane while traffic in
the opposite direction will be able to use both lanes as usual. All work will be completed and all lanes reopened by
6:15 a.m. Monday. During work on the northbound lanes, the Fourth Avenue on- and off-ramps will be closed.
During work on the southbound lanes, the Third Avenue on- and off-ramps will be closed. Lane closures will not
affect access to the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard off-ramp.
Traffic speeds in the work zone will be reduced to 25 mph. Motorists are cautioned to leave plenty of
stopping distance and watch for signs and flaggers as they approach the lane detours. Use alternate routes if
possible.
Here’s the specific schedule for the lane closures:
July 11-14 – northbound left lane under repair, northbound traffic shifted to southbound side of bridge
July 18-21 – northbound right lane under repair, northbound traffic shifted to southbound side of bridge
July 25-28 – southbound right lane under repair, southbound traffic shifted to northbound side of bridge
August 1-4 - southbound left lane under repair, southbound traffic shifted to northbound side of bridge
The contractor for the project is Wildish Construction, working under contract to the Eugene Public Works
Department. The contract also includes repaving East Broadway from Franklin Boulevard to Pearl Street and
Oliver Street from 11 to 13 avenues. Total estimated cost of the repairs is $1 million, with most of the funds
thth
coming from Eugene’s voter-approved bond measure to fix streets.
For more information about this and other major road-repair projects in the Eugene area, go to
www.keepusmoving.info or follow EugenePW on Twitter.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
