, <br /> • • <br /> a <br /> The Metropolitan Sports Commission. The Metropolitan Sports Commission was established <br /> in May, 1993 through intergovernmental agreement between the cities of Eugene and Springfield <br /> and Lane County government. Members of the commission include most of the government <br /> entities which either program amateur sports or own facilities which are used by amateur athletes <br /> in the metro area. Membership includes: <br /> City of Springfield <br /> Lane County <br /> City of Eugene <br /> School District 19 - Springfield <br /> School District 52 - Bethel <br /> School District 4J - Eugene <br /> Wllamalane Park and Recreation District <br /> River Road Park and Recreation District <br /> University of Oregon <br /> Lane Community College <br /> Kidsports <br /> Convention and Visitors Association of Lane County <br /> Five At -Large Members (appointed by majority vote of the above members) <br /> Purpose of the Commission. The primary purpose of the Commission is to advise elected and <br /> appointed officials on techniques and methods to improve existing athletic facilities and <br /> construct new facilities using private - public financial partnerships and other means as may be <br /> appropriate; and to unify and coordinate activities between metropolitan sports groups, venue <br /> owners and operators, and event organizers. <br /> Secondary purposes of the Commission are to assist sports groups in identifying and <br /> approaching funding sources; to assist in retaining sporting events already occurring in the <br /> metropolitan area; to encourage and assist in the recruitment of sporting events to the region, <br /> including participation -based events and spectator events; to act as a resource to sports event <br /> organizing groups by providing information, advice, and direction for special events, camps, <br /> workshops, clinics, and related conventions; to cooperate, share, and promote efficient and <br /> effective maintenance methods and techniques among facilities owners and managers; and to E, <br /> address other issues as may be delegated to it by any of the three local governments. <br /> Sports As the Metro Sports Commission started meeting, it was decided that a strategic <br /> plan was needed to help guide the work of the Commission, and SportsPlan began. The <br /> purpose of SportsPlan is to present a metro -wide, regional plan for furthering the development of <br /> amateur athletics that will contain a vision for the preferred future for amateur athletics as well as - <br /> strategies for its realization. <br /> Sports Page 1 <br /> , <br />
