How Should Technology Be Used? (Tony Jobanek and Rob
Brooks)
1. Don't buy gadgets to buy things
Determining technology needs should be discussed at the operational team being
affected.
2. New equipment bought, training needed
Currently vehicle specifications include a requirement to include training for the
equipment user and for those who maintain the equipment. Supervisors should
work with their staff to ensure the correct level of training is included in the
specifications when working with Fleet in procuring their vehicles and equipment.
3. Cross training better integration between sections
Currently the Maintenance worker %2 training program includes cross training
between multiple operational work sections. Individuals interested in learning more
about other sections should work directly with their supervisors to coordinate
possible additional cross training opportunities.
4. Adding comp (computer ?) in the field assists both field/office
There are currently work teams experimenting with the use of field computers. As
the technology evolves there will be greater opportunities to grow the ability for
team members to track data in the field.
5. Identify the problem so we can get the correct tech
Operational work units should discuss what they are trying to accomplish through
the use of the technology and work with their supervisor and section manager to
ensure they are getting the correct technology for the work application.
6. Don't want the solution defining the problem
Determining the technology needs of a work team should include the discussion and
problem identification by those affected by the proposed technological change.
7. Companies use munci as testing ground
Purchasing first year production vehicles and equipment should be done only with
research and analysis prior to purchase to ensure the vehicle will perform correctly
and will not be subject to an excessive amount of failures or problems. Company
quality- history and warranty support is included in the analysis prior to moving
forward with a purchase of new production model vehicles /equipment.
8. Embrace new tech, but don't lose ground on big picture
The application of new technology is based on the operational needs of an individual
work team. Discussion related to the impacts to technological changes should take
place at the work team level.
24
