About the department .. .
<br />With six divisions and nearly 400 employees, Public Works is the City's second largest department. We are responsible for
<br />a wide variety of activities and programs. Public Works services are provided by sic divisions: Administration, Airport,
<br />Engineering, Maintenance, Transportation, and Wastewater. Through strategic planning, the department serves as a leader
<br />in pioneering new programs and studies that improve the appearance of the city and contribute to healthy, safe, and
<br />environmentally sound growth.
<br />Administration provides overall management, public communication, and policy and financial direction for Public Works.
<br />Administration staff coordinates the nearly $30 million operating budget and a $20 million capital projects budget.
<br />Airport staff is responsible for providing quality, safe, and cost- efficient airport facilities and air transportation services.
<br />Eugene Airport is the second largest airport in Oregon, serving seven western Oregon counties and nearly one - quarter of
<br />the state's population.
<br />Engineering staff provides design/construction management services for constructing, preserving, and improving Eugene's
<br />roads, sanitary and storm sewers, bike paths, and buildings. They oversee the City's wetland and stormwater management
<br />programs and handle the contracting of majorprojects, such asthe River Road sewer construction project. Staff also oversees
<br />City owned and leased buildings.
<br />Maintenance staff provides cost - effective preventive maintenance for public infrastructure, parks, and equipment. Major
<br />responsibilities include maintaining the surface condition of city streets, bike ways, and bridges; caring for drainage systems;
<br />inspecting, cleaning, and repairing sanitary sewer systems; overseeing the public rights -of -way and parks; providing park
<br />areas and facilities that are clean and accessible; and inspecting and maintaining all trees on public properties and in City
<br />parks.
<br />Transportation ensures the community has a safe, efficient, and economical transportation system. They accomplish their
<br />mission by installing, maintaining, and operating all traffic control devices and street lights; reviewing development plans for
<br />traffic safety; enforcing parking regulations; overseeing planning studies; and promoting a broad mix of alternative
<br />transportation modes.
<br />Wastewater oversees both local and regional wastewater services and operates and maintains all pollution control facilities
<br />for the cities of Eugene and Springfield and the River Road/Santa Clara areas. Plant facilities include the regional treatment
<br />plant, a 286 -acre Cannery Waste Treatment Facility, a 154 -acre Sludge Management Facility, and 43 sewage pumping
<br />stations. Treated water meets or exceeds all guidelines set by federal and state authorities.
