A MAIL -IN SURVEY REGARDING PARKS IN EUGENE
May, 1998
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to assist the City of Eugene in determining attitudes of Eugene residents
regarding parks in Eugene.
METHODOLOGY
In January 1998, the City of Eugene produced a newspaper insert which included a mail -in survey. This
survey instrument was in addition to a telephone survey conducted by Advanced Market Research, and
both serve to measure interest in various proposals for a parks and open space measure. The mail -in
survey was also distributed to those residents who do not normally take delivery of the newspaper with
the regular delivery of advertising supplements to all residents.
RESPONSE RATE
Of the 120,000 Eugene residents, 777 responded by mailing their surveys. Responses show a bias, in
that a greater number of South Eugene residents returned the survey (300 out of 777).
FAMILIARITY WITH INFORMATION
A majority of respondents (70 %) read "all" of the information piece accompanying the mail -in survey. One
hundred and ninety eight respondents (29 %) read "some" of it, while 3% of the persons responding to the
survey read "hardly any" of it.
LIKELIHOOD OF VOTING FOR MEASURES
At the $40 million level (Choice A), over half of the respondents (60 %) would very likely vote for a parks
measure. About the same percentage of respondents would vote for a measure at the $30 million level
(Choice B), however fewer respondents answered that question. At the $20 million level (Choice C), 56%
of respondents say they would vote for a measure.
If the election were today, how would you vote below on Choice A?
