Eugene Survey
On Athletic Fields, Open Spaces, and Parks
January, 1998
Introduction
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the research is to learn the attitudes of Eugene voters regarding a possible ballot
measure to maintain and expand Eugene's parks, build new athletic fields, gyms, and swimming
pools, and purchase more open spaces.
METHODOLOGY:
A total of 400 interviews of likely Eugene general election voters were completed. The sample
was selected and quotas were established to guarantee a statistically accurate representation of
the likely voting population in a November, 1998 election.
The survey has an error margin of approximately 5 %.
Telephone interviews were conducted between January 19 and 23, 1998 by interviewers hired
and administered by Advanced Marketing Research of Eugene, Oregon. The response rate was
69 %.
NOTES ON INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS
More complete analyses will be provided later, but several guidelines should be noted with these
preliminary results.
First, this survey is simply a snapshot of options at a point in time. Over time, as people acquire
more information, opinions will change and is the only guarantee.
Second, the sample simulates participants in a typical November General election.
Third, based on other, similar surveys, voters who are undecided about money measures are
much more likely to vote no than yes when the question appears on the ballot. It is safest to
interpret undecided voters as likely no voters. In practice, some of the yes voters probably will
also vote no when the time to vote arrives.
