12
to the pipes. Closing it would bring the streams above ground and it would only be re- opened in
an emergency situation.
Monitoriar Maintenance:
Once the stream is up and running some routine maintenance on the newly created
habitats will need to take place. Weeding invasive species and making sure natives are taking
hold will be a key factor. Also monitoring any erosion will be essential in the early stages of the
project but should be easily manageable because of the relatively small size of the streams being
restored. Debris will have to be removed from the stream to keep the drainage system intact.
Part IV: Benefits for Course and Community
Restoring the streams at Laurelwood will not only have positive impacts on the
profitability of the golf course it will also lead to increased enjoyment by the patrons. The
benefits for the community at large will be a lasting legacy for generations to come. The course
will be able to generate higher revenue throughout the year due to the increase in drainage during
the wet months. This would allow the peak golf season to be extended at Laurelwood due more
access and playability for the average golfer. Bringing more golfers in will result in selling more
shop merchandise, range tokens and of course more green fees. This increase in profits will go
hand in hand with savings on water, fossil fuel, pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer. Implementing
this restoration plan gives Laurelwood the opportunity to reach their highest profit potential and
will ultimately lead to an increased 'investment in the golf course as a whole.
A focal point will also be the leverage and recognition they will gain with their new green
image. This will entice new golfers and media attention to the course both local and national.
Official certification by Audubon International is the ultimate goal of the caretakers of
Laurelwood, this restoration would be a giant step toward achieving that goal.
