R <br />stream network were adopted it would reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation <br />greatly; about one eighth of the area of the course would no longer need to be irrigated. <br />The new sprinkler heads along with the stream system have the potential to save the golf <br />course about $9,400 per year in water bills alone. <br />• Herbicide, pesticide, fertilizer and fossil fuel use: <br />Bringing these streams to the surface clearly results in a decrease in overall area <br />needing maintenance this in turn leads to less need for these environmentally harmful <br />chemicals. Herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and fossil fuels have become golf course <br />essentials around the world; Laurelwood is trying to get away from this model of <br />maintenance. Knowing its role in the community and is trying to find a balance between <br />providing a top quality golf product and being environmentally responsible in a <br />community where chemical applications and fossil fuel consumption are generally <br />viewed as harmful. <br />Averaged over `081'09 Laurelwood spent about $6,580 on gasoline and diesel <br />fuel alone, the stream restoration project would save the course about $1,316 annually not <br />to mention the positives for the environment and the community as a whole. <br />• Natural environmental setting: <br />Historically golf courses were set up with nature on the outside, viewed as a <br />nuisance when weeds or critters found their way onto the fairways and greens. <br />Laurelwood wants to change this trend and follow the lead of Audubon International, a <br />group promoting harmony between golfers, golf courses around the globe, and the natural <br />environment. Close proximity to Hendrix Park and the south hills of Eugene make <br />seeing wildlife at Laurelwood a regular occurrence. The course wants to promote this <br />
