April 28, 2014

CONTACT: Scott Gillespie, Civil Engineer, 541-682-2706

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Willamette Street Restricted to Southbound Traffic Between 11 and 13
thth
A two-block section of Willamette Street between 11 and 13 avenues will be restricted to
thth
southbound traffic for the next several weeks to allow the construction of a new pedestrian and
bicycle crossing on Willamette at 12 Alley.
th
No northbound traffic will be allowed, and only one lane will be open for southbound traffic.
Motorists can avoid delays and detours by using alternate routes, such as Oak Street for northbound
traffic and Lincoln Street for southbound traffic. Motorists driving southbound through the work zone
should watch for lane detours, flaggers and construction equipment and workers in the roadway.
Eugene Sand & Gravel, working under contract to Commercial Enterprises Inc., which is
general contractor to Capstone Collegiate Communities, began excavation for the new crossing today.
The crossing on Willamette Street and another on Olive Street at 12 Avenue are part of Capstone’s
th
overall 13 and Olive apartment complex.
th
Workers from Eugene Sand had only worked for several hours before uncovering what
appeared to be trolley tracks on the west side of Willamette Street. They quickly called in City
inspectors, who determined that work should stop until the State Historical Preservation Office could
be contacted.
A similar situation occurred last summer, when construction company workers found trolley
tracks and basalt paving stones under Willamette Street in the vicinity of 20 Avenue. At that
th
location, the tracks and pavers were excavated, and pieces of the tracks and pavers were used as
artwork on a concrete traffic diverter.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
