February 7, 2014, noon

CONTACT: Eric Johnson, Incident Commander, 541-682-4800

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Eugene Continues Round-the-Clock Storm Response Operations
Eugene Public Works crews continue to sand, plow and deice priority routes as more snow
and ice accumulate on area streets. The ice-snow emergency declared Thursday remains in effect.
This means parked or abandoned vehicles on priority routes may be towed without warning.
Crews worked through the night, focusing on main routes for the morning commute as
round-the-clock storm response operations continue in Eugene. As of Friday mid-morning, two
deicer trucks, seven sanders and five plows were in action. All priority 1 routes and most of the
city’s priority 2 routes have been treated. Crews are also beginning to tackle some of the busier
residential streets in the south hills. A map showing the location of priority routes can be viewed at
www.eugene-or.gov/snow.
Since the snow storm began early Thursday morning, Public Works crews have applied
about 200 cubic yards of traction sand and used approximately 3,600 gallons of liquid deicer.
Forecasts that include the possibility of freezing rain later today have prompted Public
Works to ready urban forestry crews to handle down limbs and trees.
“It’s very difficult to predict what this storm will do next,” Incident Commander Eric
Johnson said. “We want to be ready in case ice-covered trees fall and block streets.”
Meanwhile, Public Works crews continue to shovel access ramps in the downtown area and
sidewalks in front of public buildings. Property owners are reminded that they are responsible for
keeping sidewalks passable next to their properties.
Community members can go to www.eugene-or.gov/snow or call 541-682-4800 if they
have questions about the ice-snow emergency.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
