February 6, 2014, 3:00 p.m.

CONTACT: Eric Johnson, Incident Commander, 541-682-4800

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Eugene Drivers Advised to Use Priority Routes for Afternoon Commute
Eugene drivers are advised to use priority routes as much as possible for today’s afternoon
commute. Eugene Public Works is focusing its plowing and sanding operations on major
thoroughfares as more snow continues to fall in the Eugene area.
Public Works has geared up to round-the-clock operations to respond to a winter storm
that could last for multiple days. This afternoon, eight plows and sanders are deployed on Eugene’s
priority-one and -two routes. A map showing the location of priority routes can be viewed at
www.eugene-or.gov/snow.
Examples of higher priority routes include Sixth and Seventh avenues and Highway 99, the
Ferry Street Bridge corridor and Coburg Road, Franklin Boulevard, 11 and 18 avenues,
thth
Willamette Street, Chambers Street, and River Road. Crews will get to lower-priority streets as
resources allow.
Motorists should not park or abandon their vehicles on priority routes. Public Works has
declared an ice-snow emergency, which means that parked vehicles on priority routes may be
towed without warning.
Based on forecasts of snow and freezing temperatures continuing at least through Friday,
Public Works opened its Emergency Command Center early this morning. In addition to plowing,
sanding and deicing streets, crews have begun shoveling snow from access ramps and sidewalks in
front of City buildings in the downtown area. Property owners are reminded that they are
responsible for keeping sidewalks passable next to their properties.
Community members can go to www.eugene-or.gov/snow or call 541-682-4800 if they
have questions about the ice-snow emergency.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
